Is walking too dangerous? CA leads in pedestrian traffic deaths

Walking is often recommended as an ideal way to get some exercise. Although still highly beneficial, new data is finding that this form of exercise and transportation has gotten more dangerous in recent years. The data that led to this finding digs into the number of pedestrians that are killed when struck by cars.

Researchers analyzing this data note that these accidents are on the rise throughout the country.

What does the data say about California? California is topping the list in a number of categories. The information comes from a recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). The organization states that California, along with Florida, Texas and New York, accounts for 42 percent of all pedestrian deaths throughout the nation. California is also one of only five states that reported more than 100 pedestrian fatalities in 2016.

How many pedestrian fatalities were reported in 2016? The report estimates that 5,997 pedestrians were killed due to auto accidents in 2016, but only provides state specific data for the first six months of 2016. For this time period, the organization reports there were 359 fatalities from January through June of 2016 in California.

Researchers with the study note that the data for 2016 is preliminary.

What factors have contributed to the increase in pedestrian traffic fatalities? Authors with the report note that a number of factors likely contributed to the increase in pedestrian deaths. These factors include everything from the demographics of the area to the weather.

However, the authors also note that the overall traffic fatalities in this category increased by 25 percent from 2010 to 2015. One factor these experts point to as a "more recent contributing factor" is the use of smart phones.

What should I do if I am injured in a pedestrian accident? Pedestrian accidents can result in serious injuries. If you are injured or lose a loved one in this type of accident legal remedies may be available through a personal injury lawsuit. This can include a monetary award to help the costs connected to this accident. Expenses like medical bills and rehabilitative costs as well as missed wages if the injury resulted in the inability to work. Contact an experienced attorney to discuss your options.
