Are teens still susceptible to peer pressure?

Indeed, parents of young drivers (including college aged drivers) may loathe the possibility that their children may text and drive, but drunk driving remains persistent problem among teens and young adults. For the uninitiated, car accidents are the leading cause of death for young people ages 15 through 21 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further, a study published by the Child Health and Human Development found that teens who ride in a car with a drunk driver are more likely to drink and drive themselves. The study focused on 10th graders who had driver’s licenses, and most revealed that they would likely drive drunk before they graduated from high school. No specific theories were noted to explain this behavior, but it seemed like teens would believe it is okay for someone drive while “buzzed” or “tipsy.” Because of this, they may believe that drinking and driving is safe as long as one is not “sloppy” drunk and stumbling around.

This ill-fated confidence could lead to devastating results. When this occurs, a drunk driver could be held liable to those injured or killed in an accident. Basically, people injured in a crash can seek compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses and lost wages from a drunk driver.

So while it seems obvious that young drivers should not drink alcohol before getting behind the wheel, the reality is some kids will not heed warnings about drunk driving and accidents will occur. In these situations, an experienced personal injury attorney can advise you of your rights and options.
