New study may change the way spinal cord injuries are treated

Far too many individuals who are injured in car accidents and workplace accidents are left with injuries that leave them utterly debilitated. Amongst these injuries are those that affect the brain and spinal cord. Fully recovering from these injuries is unlikely in most cases, and the rehabilitation process can be extremely expensive, tiring, and time-consuming. While this can be disheartening, advances in medical research and technologies may be creating more effective ways to treat these injuries.

One recent example of these advances stems from a study being conducted by the University of Louisville. There, epidural stimulation is being used on those suffering from paralysis in an attempt to allow them to reclaim movement. Thirty-six participants in the study will have a device implanted near their spinal cord that will introduce electricity into their nervous systems. Over time, researchers hope, this electricity will help the participants' once paralyzed limbs learn how to feel and move. This may even allow those who were once paralyzed from the waist down to be able to stand and walk again. The device may also help alleviate blood pressure levels in these individuals, which can be of critical importance.

This study, while exciting, is only in its early stages. Even if it is successful, the device will still need to undergo clinical trial before it is introduced to the public. It could be years before those suffering from spinal cord injuries are able to access this treatment.

In the meantime, those who have suffered one of these injuries caused by the negligence of another need to obtain the best medical care they can. To do so, though, they will need money to pay for it. This is why pursuing a personal injury lawsuit against a negligent party is so important for many brain and spinal cord injury victims. Those who want to learn more about how a legal claim may benefit them can discuss the matter with a legal professional.
