New blood test detects brain injuries

When it comes to serious harm such as brain and spinal cord injuries, quick diagnosis and treatment can be critical. Any delay may lead to additional harm and/or a delayed recovery. This is why doctors in California strive to utilize appropriate medical testing in a timely fashion.

A new test hopes to allow medical professionals to more quickly diagnose brain injuries, which could reduce the need for brain scans that expose patients to radiation. The blood test detects certain proteins that present themselves when the brain has been injured. It has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and it is hoped to be widely utilized in the next year or two. The test has been found to be 98 percent accurate.

Some medical professionals are doubtful with regard to the test's usefulness, though. They point to the fact that current screening tools used by doctors are accurate, too, meaning that patients are only subjected to CT scans when absolutely necessary. These individuals also doubt that the test can effectively be utilized in the emergency room, as it could take hours for the test results to come back. Additionally, they claim that the screening tools utilized by doctors may determine that no additional testing is necessary, thereby preventing patients from being subjected to intrusive blood testing.

Although advances in medical testing and procedures have increased the chances that serious medical conditions will be detected early and treated effectively, the reality is that those who suffer traumatic brain injury or a spinal cord injury will have a difficult life to deal with moving forward. In the blink of an eye, these individuals can see their physical and mental capabilities stripped from them. In addition to these damages, victims and their families can be left with tremendous financial losses. Those victims who hope to recoup compensation for these damages may be able to do so if their harm was caused by the negligence of another.
