Spinal cord injuries can have a drastic impact

Severe injuries can await those in California who are involved in a workplace accident or car crash. While some of these injuries are only temporary in nature, others, particularly those involving the brain and the spinal cord, can be permanent. These individuals' lives can be forever changed by their injuries, as they often lead to physical and cognitive limitations that render them unable to carry out the daily tasks they once used to complete with ease.

Those who suffer from a spinal cord injury can face especially challenging circumstances. Depending on the type and severity of their injury, these individuals can face paralysis, loss of bladder and bowel control, blood circulation and respiratory issues, pain and mental health problems such as depression. Each of these symptoms can affect an individual's ability to enjoy life, raise a family and even earn a living.

Sadly, medical treatment has not advanced to the point where spinal cord injuries can be fully healed. Instead, most treatment options focus on preventing additional injury and teaching an affected individual to live with his or her limitations. However, spinal cord injury sufferers usually work with physical therapists and other health care professionals to work on building their muscles and reclaiming their motor skills. Medication may also be utilized to reduce pain and eliminate muscle spasms.

Paying for initial medical treatment as well as on-going care can be difficult for these injury victims, especially when their injuries prevent them from working. Fortunately, those whose injuries were caused by the negligence of another may be able to seek compensation for their damages. If these individuals can successfully show negligence and causation, then money may be awarded to them. Although these awards may not lead to their full recuperation, it can go a long way toward making their life much more manageable.
