Statistics on bicycle accidents

As a bicyclist, or as the concerned parent of a young bicyclist, it is essential to recognize the many different dangers that increase the odds of bicycle accidents. Moreover, you should take a look at statistics on these accidents in order to understand how widespread they are and the number of people hurt and killed.

Bicycle accident injuries and deaths

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that during 2015, bicycle accidents resulted in nearly 467,000 bicyclist injuries. Moreover, the CDC reports that even though bicyclist trips make up only 1% of all road trips in the U.S., they are more likely to suffer injuries or lose their lives in traffic accidents than those riding in vehicles.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 846 bicyclists lost their lives in traffic crashes during 2019.

The NHTSA reports that during 2019, more bicyclists lost their lives on urban roads than rural roads, and six times as many male cyclists lost their lives in accidents in comparison to female cyclists. Throughout the year, a majority of fatal bicycle accidents occurred between 6 PM and 9 PM.
