Do e-bike operators have to obey the rules of the road?

To stay safe on the road, it is essential to understand the laws and rules that apply to you and your chosen mode of transportation.

If you are riding an e-bike, you want to be sure you understand the laws applicable to you. Not only will this help to keep you safe but it also will help you to avoid potential tickets.

Basics

The California Department of Motor Vehicles explains all two-wheeled vehicles, including e-bikes, have to follow the same laws as other vehicles. So, you must drive on the right side of the road, obey all traffic signs, adhere to rules about stoplights and follow speed limits. You also must use signals when turning. Make sure that you give pedestrians the right of way as well.

More details

It is important to understand that when riding an e-bike on the road, you will need to make sure you understand not only the road rules but also the rules applicable to two-wheeled vehicles. For example, you cannot ride in specific areas, such as freeways, or carry passengers without having proper alterations to your bike. You also want to note rules about bike lanes. You may be able to ride in a bike lane in some areas, but that is up to local laws, which you should know if you are riding in that area. Finally, you have to wear a helmet on an e-bike.

Do note that as an e-bike rider, you do not have to follow laws pertaining to licensing and registration. You do not need to have a driver’s license or register your bike with the state. In addition, the law does not require you to have insurance coverage.
