Double Fatality DUI on State Route 125

December 15, 2011

Celia Torres, 73, and her grandson, David Gonzalez, 16, were killed about 5:35 p.m. Friday when their Nissan Pathfinder was struck from behind in a chain-reaction crash on Route 125 in La Mesa. A 2001 Chevrolet Silverado truck rear-ended Celia Torres's Nissan Pathfinder as rush-hour traffic slowed on California Highway 125 near La Mesa, the CHP said. The Pathfinder was pushed into a Lincoln, which then collided with a Ford truck. The Silverado and Pathfinder then burst into flames. The driver of the Chevy Silverado was able to escape, however Celia Torres and her Grandson, David Gonzalez, died in the fire, the CHP said. The other drivers were unhurt in the collision, which occurred about 5:35 p.m.

The driver of the Silverado, Justin Foulds was arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail, the CHP said. He reportedly had been celebrating at a Christmas party before attempting to drive home. Foulds appeared in El Cajon Superior Court Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to four felony counts, including gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI causing injury.
Please take this tragic accident as a reminder of the importance of organizing a safe ride home. This time of year there are many holiday parties and many reasons to celebrate. Please be safe while planning your evening, organize a designated driver or a alternate means of transportation to get home. If you plan to host a party at your home, or at your business, please recommend when you invite guests to the party that they plan ahead for a safe ride home, be responsible and take keys of those that are drinking to ensure they do not get behind the wheel of a vehicle. You do not want to take away a family's reason to celebrate because you make a poor decision to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. We have listed a few important links to keep on hand this time of year.

We leave you with these words from Andrea Torres, she lost her mother and her son in the accident on Friday night.

"It's awful," she said. "People don't think about all the damage they can cause, not just in their own lives but in other lives like right now. My son, he wanted so much out of life, and it was just cut out. Everything gone."
