How can a traumatic brain injury affect a person's life?

Whether it is caused by a car crash, a sports injury or a fall, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can be disabling or even fatal. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reports that TBIs play a role in about 30 percent of all fatal injuries in the nation. Therefore, it is important for residents of Encinitas to recognize how a severe TBI can affect an individual's life.

When a person suffers a severe TBI, he or she may suffer from amnesia or may even be placed in a coma. Moreover, of those who were sent to the hospital due to a severe TBI, 43 percent wound up suffering a disability in relation to their TBI 12 months after sustaining the TBI.

A TBI can affect a person's ability to pay attention and remember things. It could leave an individual physically weak, and it could affect a person's sense of balance and coordination. A person's senses, such as their ability to hear, see, perceive things or their ability touch could all be affected by a TBI. A TBI could also cause a person to suffer mentally, for example, by making the person depressed, anxious, impulsive or aggressive.

The effects of a TBI can impact a person's entire life. It can cause strains with their personal relationships, make it difficult to hold down a job or could even make simple daily tasks to become difficult. A person may have incurred significant medical expenses, need rehabilitation and may not be able to work until they recover from the TBI, if they recover at all. Therefore, if a person's TBI is caused by another person's negligence, the person who suffered the TBI may want to determine if they can take legal action in order to pursue compensation for the harms they suffered.
